Fort Worth Area Spring Tree Care

Springs Winds – Great for Kites. Not so good for young trees.

Spring is the windy season in North Texas!

March – September is also severe storm and tornado season. The best defense against tree storm damage is being prepared.

Types of Tree Support Systems

Urban trees often need some degree of supplemental, physical support to reduce the risk of structural failure of the tree.

Cabling, bracing, guying and staking can provide a solution for these tree failures.

Tree support systems help support the tree by limiting the movement of branches, leaders or the entire tree. This reduces the risk of injury to humans and damage to property by providing supplemental support for structurally weak areas of the tree.

Tree Storm Damage Branch Break – Over-Extension and ‘V-crotch’ Configuration

Tree Structural Deficiencies Needing Cabling or Bracing

The most common risk of tree breakage due to stress from wind is the presence of one or more ‘V-crotch’ branches. Codominant stems, or “v-crotches,” are structurally weak compared to a single stronger stem.

Over-extension is another risk to trees in windy conditions. These are limbs that are unusually long for the tree. Early corrective tree pruning is the best way to prevent branch over-extension. Breakage from over-extension usually occurs at the junction of the branch and stem. Or the branch may crack due to the force of winds and storms. Installation of support cables can be used to avoid making large pruning cuts in an established tree.

Weather forecaster, AccuWeather, is predicting a higher frequency of severe storm risks in Tornado Alley. This includes parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska.

The Dallas-Fort Worth area is on the southern end of Tornado Alley. And one study has suggested that Tornado Alley may be shifting eastward.

“We believe that the more traditional severe weather region of the central and southern Plains will have a higher potential for tornadoes and severe weather more frequently than they have experienced on average the past three years,” Paul Pastelok, AccuWeather’s Lead Long-Range Meteorologist, said in a news release.

From 1950 to 2019, Tarrant County has recorded 94 tornadoes. Johnson County, just to the south, has seen the most in North Central Texas with 102. Read more at https://www.star-telegram.com/news/local/community/fort-worth/article226799754.html
